Tit for Tat
A merchant once wanted to go on a long journey. He made enough arrangements for the journey. There was one problem though. He had a ton of iron at home. He wanted to keep it safe while he was away, but he didn’t know what to do with it.
The merchant had several friends. One of them offered to take care of the iron. The merchant was happy to hear this and he set out on his journey. After several weeks he returned home. After resting for a while, he called on his friend and asked for the iron.
His friend was all tears and full of excuses, ‘Sorry, my friend. I lost it all. I had kept it in a safe place. But some mice attacked it and devoured it without a trace. They were a big army.
The merchant didn’t know what to say. How could an army of mice, however big they are, devour a ton of iron? He was sure his friend was lying. He wanted to settle the scores with his treacherous friend, but he didn’t want to resort to any violence. So he kept his cool. When it was time to take leave, he asked the five-year-old son of his friend if he wanted to go to the zoo with him. The child readily accepted the invitation, and left with the merchant.
The merchant hid the boy in his home. In the evening, he went to his friend’s home looking quite unhappy. ‘What happened? Where is my son?’ asked the boy’s father anxiously. ‘My friend,’ said the merchant, ‘I am really sorry. A hawk took your child away. It was a big hawk. I couldn’t do anything. Now there is no use worrying over it.’
‘Are you nuts?’ asked the boy’s father angrily, ‘How can a hawk pick up such a big child?’
The merchant replied in a calm voice, ‘You see my friend, this is a strange country. Anything can happen here. The mice eat iron, that too not less than a ton. The hawks are equally capable too. Don’t you think so?’
His friend got the message. He knelt before the merchant and begged for his child. The merchant said that he would give the boy, if he gets his iron back. His friend was more than ready to oblige. The merchant kept his word and returned the boy.
