When to Use the Simple Present Tense

Structure: Subject + infinitive (first form of the verb) + object/complement

I love sweets. (subject – I; verb – love; object – sweets)
We are ready. (subject – we; verb – are; complement – ready)

The Simple Present Tense is used:

)1 To express a general truth

  • Sugar is sweet.
  • Honesty is the best policy.
  • Man is mortal.
  • Sun rises in the east.
  • Heat expands bodies.
  • A rolling stone gathers no mosses.
  • Cats eat mice.
  • Bird make nests.
  • Fish live in water.
  • The earth moves round the sun.
  • Plants need water and sunlight.

2) To talk about a habit or custom

  • I go to school every day.
  • The shop opens at 9 am.
  • I wake up at 6 o’clock.

3) To talk about our likes, dislikes, preferences etc.

  • I enjoy reading.
  • I like animals.
  • I hate to work on Sundays.
  • I wake up early in the morning.
  • She does not eat fish or meat.

4) To say what is happening at the moment of speaking

  • The child sleeps.
  • I write.
  • They play.

5) To talk about people’s occupation and living arrangements

  • He works in a bank.
  • She lives with her grandmother.
  • She writes short stories.
  • My sister volunteers for a local charity.
  • She earns a fat salary.
  • He spends a lot of money on gadgets.
