Basic rules of subject verb agreement

English verbs have both singular and plural forms. We use the singular form of the verb when the subject is a singular noun or pronoun. Likewise, we use the plural form of the verb when the subject is a plural noun or pronoun.

Nouns that are always used with plural verbs – trousers, jeans, pants, pyjamas, glasses, scissors, binoculars, thongs

Nouns that can be used with a singular or plural verb – audience, committee, company, family, firm, government, staff, team
