The Man Who Forgot To Sing
Once upon a time there lived a cobbler in a small hut. He was very poor and barely managed to earn enough to make a living. There was a big mansion next to his hut. A rich man lived in that mansion.
The cobbler was poor, but he was happy. He would always sing lovely songs as he mended people’s shoes. The rich man found this surprising. He had all the money in the world; still he couldn’t sing a song. He was always worrying about something or the other and could never find enough happiness to sing a song. He couldn’t sleep well either.
The rich man became envious of the cobbler. He decided that he must do something that would stop the cobbler from singing or sleeping well.
The next morning, he went up to the cobbler.
‘How much money do you earn in a day?’ he asked the cobbler.
The cobbler said that he barely managed to earn Rs 10 or 15 a day.
‘Then you must be living in utter poverty,’ the rich man expressed his sympathy.
‘But I man happy with what I get,’ said the cobbler.
‘I will help you,’ said the rich man, ‘I will give you a huge sum of money.’
The rich man kept his word. He gave the cobbler a huge sum of money. The cobbler was very happy to receive such a huge sum of money.
‘How will I return this money?’ asked the cobbler.
‘You don’t have to,’ said the rich man, ‘I am very rich. I don’t want you to return this money.’
That night, the cobbler kept wondering where he would keep the money. ‘What would I do if thieves stole my money?’ He then decided to lend the money to someone, so that he would get interest, but soon changed his mind. He was worried that the person who borrowed the money might not return it.
As his mind became occupied with thoughts of this kind, he failed to sleep. He wasn’t feeling well the next morning and couldn’t do his job properly. He was constantly worrying about the money. Soon the man stopped singing. He lost his happiness and became as unhappy as the rich man who gave him the money.
