The Haunted House
I stopped my scooter in front of an old and dilapidated building. A haggard, skinny old man with drooping shoulders came towards me. ‘Don’t go in Sir,’ he whispered. ‘It is dangerous….’
I was alarmed. What could be the danger? I thought. I asked the man why he didn’t want me to go inside the building. ‘It is haunted,’ he said. ‘Almost every night we hear screams coming from that building. Nobody goes there even during the day,’ he added.
However, I was determined to go. I am a journalist and I have come here with the sole objective of unraveling the mystery surrounding this old building. I don’t believe in ghosts or other supernatural elements. Even if they do exist, I see no reason for them to harm me.
Hence I told the man that I was definitely going inside. His face turned pale. I asked him to wait outside while I searched the place. And thus I went inside. Of course, I was a bit a worried. I knew I was treading a dangerous path. Still, the curiosity got me knowing. The front door was locked, so I went around the building to see if there was any other way to get inside. The back door was locked too. However, there was an open window. Termites had eaten its wooden frame and bars. With a little difficulty I managed to climb in through this window. As I entered the building what struck me was the sight of bottles lying around. They were too many of them. I immediately realized that they were liquor bottles. There were cigarette stumps and discarded needles and syringes too. I also noticed some men sleeping on the floor in one of the rooms. I didn’t go near them. I walked around without making a noise, took many photos and exited as fast as I could.
My next stop was the police station. I talked to the inspector and showed him the photos. Without any delay police raided the building and arrested the gang. It turned out that they were antisocial elements who assembled there to smoke, drink and do drugs. To prevent people from finding them out, they had spread the rumour that the building was haunted. At night they played records of women screaming to frighten people.
The inspector said that they had received several complaints about drug abuse in the area; however, they had received no evidence so far. He congratulated me for helping them bust the gang.
