35. Electricity has such a wide range of applications in today’s world that its per capita consumption is considered as an index of development. Electricity is generated mainly in two ways: by running water which drives hydro turbines to generate hydro electricity; and by burning other fuel such as coal, petroleum and natural gas to drive turbines to produce Thermal power. Once generated, the electricity is exactly the same. Hydro electricity is generated by the fast flowing water, which is a renewable resource. India has a number of multipurpose projects like the Bakra Nangal, Damodar Valley Corporation and the Kopoli hydel project etc. producing hydroelectric power. Thermal electricity is generated by using coal, petroleum and natural gas. The thermal power stations use non-renewable fossil fuels for generating electricity.

36. In some of these transactions, services are being exchanged with the money. For some, there might not be any actual transfer of money taking place now but a promise to pay money later. Have you ever wondered why transactions are made in money? The reason is simple. A person holding money can easily exchange it for any commodity or service that he or she might want. Thus, everyone prefers to receive payments in money and then exchange the money for things that they want. Take the case of a shoe manufacturer. He wants to sell shoes in the market and buy wheat. The shoe manufacturer will first exchange shoes he has produced for money, and then exchange the money for wheat. Imagine how much difficult it would have been for him to exchange shoes directly for wheat without the use of money. He would have to find a wheat producer who not only sells wheat but also need shoes in exchange. That is, both parties have to agree to sell and buy each other’s commodities. This is known as double coincidence of wants. What a person desires to sell is exactly what another person wishes to buy. In a barter system where goods are directly exchanged without the use of money, double coincidence of wants is an essential feature. By contrast, in an economy where money is in use, the need for double coincidence of wants is eliminated. It is no longer necessary for a shoe manufacturer to find a wheat farmer who will buy his shoes and at the same time sell him wheat. All he has to do is to find a buyer for his shoes. Once he has exchanged his shoes for money, he can purchase wheat or any other commodity in the market. Since money acts as an intermediate in the exchange process, it is called the medium of exchange.

1. Why are transactions made in money?

2. Why is barter system no longer practiced?

3. What is double coincidence of wants?
