Internet has reached almost every corner of the universe and as such the demand for web services is on the rise. So if you are armed with adequate knowledge of programming, you can opt for a rewarding career as a web developer.

The role of a web developer

Web developers design, build and maintain new websites and also upgrade existing ones according to their client’s needs. He or she is responsible for making a website functional which involves the writing of the necessary programming code.

Web designer V/S Web developer

A web designer is similar to a graphic designer. His duty is to focus on the user interface and the look and the feel of the website. He is responsible for the layout, colour, and font styles etc. A web developer, on the other hand, is a software developer or software engineer who is specifically engaged in the development of World Wide Web applications and undertakes programming tasks for a website.

A career in this field

Students who wish to pursue a career in this field should be well versed with programming/scripting languages like HTML, XML, Javascript, ASP.NET, style sheet language such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), databases SQL and MySQL, 2D animation and web development applications like Flash and Dreamweaver. They should also have an understanding of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards for website development and functionality.

Job prospects

Leading companies recruit professional web developers and designers on a regular basis. Employers want to see evidence of a student’s experience along with any qualifications he/she may have. Hence students must keep a portfolio of their work. Freshers can earn around Rs 7000 per month, while professionals web developers earn anywhere between Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 per month depending upon the company in which they work and the experience they have in the field.

Skill set

To succeed as a web developer you must be able to write good code. This includes paying attention to minute details and of course being good at problem solving skills.
