Fill in the blanks with an appropriate article.

Use a/an to mean one. Use the if both the speaker and the listener know which person or thing we are talking about.

Use the to refer to unique things.

When to use the?

The definite article the is used with a number of expressions referring to the world or environment. Examples are:

  • the country
  • the town
  • the sea, the seaside
  • the hills, the mountains
  • the rain, the wind, the fog, the weather, the sunshine
  • the day, the night

The is used with superlatives.

She is the greatest writer of our times.
