Degrees of Comparison Worksheet For Class 6
Fill in the blanks with an adjective of the appropriate degree of comparison.
English adjectives recognize three degrees – positive, comparative and superlative.
The base form of the adjective is in its positive degree. Examples are: kind, clever, nice, long, big, large
Short adjectives form their comparative and superlative forms by adding -er and -est to the positive.
- kind / kinder / kindest
- clever / cleverer / cleverest
- nice / nicer / nicest
- long / longer / longest
- big / bigger / biggest
- large / larger / largest
Adjectives of more than two syllables usually form their comparative and superlative form by adding more and Bto the positive.
- splendid / more splendid / most splendid
- gorgeous / more gorgeous / most gorgeous
Notes
We use the comparative to compare one person or thing with another person or thing. We use the superlative to compare one person or thing with the whole group that he / she / it belongs to.
- He is smarter than his three brothers.
- He is the smartest of the four brothers.
When a group has only two members, we usually use the comparative instead of the superlative.
- Hari and Shyam are both smart, but Hari is the smarter of the two.
