Relative pronouns are words like who, which, whom and that.

Notes

Use who to refer to people.

  • This is the woman who knits beautiful sweaters. (Here the relative pronoun who refers to the noun woman.)
  • I know the boy who won the first prize. (Here the relative pronoun who refers to the noun boy.)

Use which to refer to things.

  • The laptop which I bought yesterday is very fast. (Here the relative pronoun which refers to the noun laptop.)

Use that to refer to either people or things.

  • This is the house that/which my grandfather built. (Here the relative pronoun that refers to the noun house.)
  • This is the girl that/who wants to meet the principal.
