Always use an article with a singular countable noun.

• I have a cat. (NOT I have cat.)
• She is a writer. (NOT She is writer.)

Plural and uncountable nouns do not normally take articles with them when we are talking about things in general.

When we are talking about particular people or things, we use the with plural and uncountable nouns.

• Cats are gorgeous. (No article because we are talking about cats in general.)
• The cats are waiting for their human to arrive. (We are talking about particular cats here; hence, we use the with it.)
• Water is heavier than oil. (water in general)
• The water in this pond is very cold. (particular water)
