What are abstract nouns?

An abstract noun is a word denoting an idea, quality, state or emotion that we cannot see or touch. Abstract nouns are singular and countable. That means they should be followed by a singular verb. Also, they cannot be used with the articles a/an. Examples of abstract nouns are: kindness, slavery, gratitude, beauty, courage, brilliance, clarity, dizziness, stupidity, cleverness, ignorance etc.
