Combine Using So…That… | Class 10 Grammar Worksheets
The conjunction so…that… shows cause and effect.
It was very hot. I didn’t leave home at all.
I didn’t leave home because it was very hot. There is a cause and effect relationship between these two sentences. We can combine them using so…that… We put an adjective or adverb after so.
- It was so hot that I didn’t leave home at all.
Note that we cannot use very in this construction. (NOT It was very hot that I didn’t leave home at all.)
- She was so beautiful. I wanted to ask her out.
- She was so beautiful that I wanted to ask her out.
- He was very busy. He didn’t have time to talk to me.
- He was so busy that he didn’t have time to talk to me.
Note that the conjunction so that is different from so…that…
So that shows purpose.
Compare:
- She ate so little that she lost a lot of weight. (Cause and effect)
- She ate very little so that she would lose weight. (Purpose)
It is common to use an auxiliary like will, would, can, could, may or might after so that.
Combine the following sentences using so…that.
