The Ass and the Lapdog

Once, a farmer owned an ass and a dog. The ass worked hard all day, hauling heavy loads. The farmer looked after him really well. He had a warm, comfortable stable, with plenty of fresh hay to eat and water to drink.

The dog stayed with his master all day, and lived in the house with him. He did no work, but he was the master’s pet. He was even allowed to sit on the master’s lap. The ass saw the dog leading a life of leisure and happiness. He grew jealous of the dog.

‘I wish the master loved me as much as he loved the dog,’ sighed the ass.

‘I work hard all day. What does the dog do apart from wagging his tail and fawning on the master? And the master cares more for him than for me. Perhaps if I too behaved like the dog, and wagged my tail and jumped on the master, the master would start loving me as much as he does the dog.’ The ass decided to wait for his chance.

One day, while the farmer and the people who work in his farm were at their midday meal, the ass broke his halter and ran into the farmhouse kitchen. There he saw the farmer sitting at the table. The ass ran up to him and began wagging his tail vigorously, and knocked off all the dishes from the table. He then started jumping around and frolicking like a little dog does, and finally landed himself down on the farmer’s lap. The shocked farmer yelled for help. His servants came running in and dragged the ass off to his stable, and gave him a beating he did not forget the rest of his life.

What is expected of a dog is not expected of a donkey. Each one of us has a certain position in life. Stay within the boundaries and you will be safe.
